GASTONIA, NC - Ricky Weeks has been a force in dirt racing for more than 25 years. He is ready to kick off his 2010 season in the Carolina Clash season opener at Carolina Speedway in Gastonia for the 10th annual Skyler Trull Memorial March 12-13.
Weeks dominated the 2004 Skyler Trull competition and also won the 75 lapper in 2005 over pole sitter Chris Madden.
“The first one I won was the largest purse I had gotten. It is a super special memory because it kept my race team going at the time,” said Weeks, known to his fans as the Rutherfordton Rocket. Weeks has won numerous races at Carolina Speedway including the Hall of Fame 50 in 2008.
The 40 lap Carolina Clash Super Late Model Series feature will pay $4000 to the driver taking the night’s checkered flag. Fans attending will also be treated to The National Dirt Racing Association (NDRA) GM Performance Late Models $2,500 to win feature and the exciting Open Wheel Modifieds feature with the winning driver taking home $1,000. Also on the card for the night will be the debut of the Thunder Sportsman.
“Clint Elkins and Mark Gibbons always work hard to get the track in the best condition possible. I’m looking forward to racing at Carolina Speedway this season,” said the Rutherfordton, N.C. native who is a 7-time Cherokee Speedway Champion, 5-time Carolina Clash Champion and 2-time Skyler Trull Memorial winner.
"Ricky Weeks is as tough of a racer as you will find in the country. He is an aggressive driver which is the type that excels at Carolina Speedway and will be a player in the outcome of the Skyler Trull Memorial," said track promoter Clint Elkins.
Other past Skyler Trull winners include, Chris Ferguson, Jonathan Davenport, Chris Madden, Randle Chupp, Dennis 'Rambo' Franklin, Carolina Speedway Hall of Famer Mike Duvall and Wesley Hood.
Weeks, a father of three and grandfather of two is especially looking forward to the race which honors Skyler and her family.
“The Trull Family has been super nice to me and my family. They gave us a swing set that was Skyler’s for my granddaughter Rylie.”
“We love to support any charities that help children,” added Weeks.
Weeks’ has also announced a new partnership with Don and Herbert Way. The two teams will join forces to form "DHR Motorsports". The team will run the familiar Don and Herbert Way number 54 while maintaining race operations from Week’s shop. "Adams Electric" will also be a key sponsor for the upcoming 2010 race season.
Friday night will see qualifying and heat races for the NDRA GM Performance Late Models along with heats for the Open Wheel Modifieds. The Pure Stock Fours and the ‘wild and wooly’ Renegade’s will do battle in heat race and main event action. The Carolina Clash Super Late Models will have an open practice session. Pit gates will open at 4 pm with grandstand gates opening at 5 pm. Racing will begin at 8 pm.
On Saturday night the Carolina Clash Super Late Models will qualify, heat race and compete in the 40 lap Skyler Trull Memorial. The NDRA GM Performance LMs will run a 25 lap main event and the Open Wheel Modifieds will do battle in their own 20 lapper. Also on the card for Saturday night will be the inaugural run for the Thunder (crate) Sportsman with a $500 to win main event. Pit gates will open at 4 pm with grandstand gates opening at 4:30 pm.
